Deadhead

Posted by Jillian - April 29th, 2009

A few nights ago David Letterman had the musical guests, The Grateful Dead, on his show. He made a point of saying repeatedly throughout the show that the Dead do not have a CD out. I am not sure what that was all about. I like the Grateful Dead and would probably buy a new album by them if they were to put one out.

When I was in college, fans of the Grateful Dead were called “Deadheads” and although I was not a Deadhead, I did like a few of their songs. Later on the released a more mainstream album and I used to play “A Touch of Grey” at some of my DJ gigs. It was easy on the ears and easy to dance to, so I liked it.

Now when someone talks about “deadhead” I take it to mean cutting off the flower after it has bloomed so that the plant will produce a new flower in it’s place. That’s how I keep my beautiful potted geraniums blooming all spring, summer and fall. Cutting off the deadhead encourages new growth.

When you think about it, that’s Nature’s Way, isn’t it? When someone dies something new takes it place.

*sigh*

Funny how getting older changes the meaning of words, not just your outlook.

Splash of Color

I never realized how many different shades of red there are until I bought these two pots of geraniums and brought them home. They are not very close in color to the azalea bush, but hanging them half way across the yard takes away some of the clash. I love geraniums – they are very low maintenance and add such a nice splash of color to your home for several months. If I’m lucky, these will last from April until well into October.

Suddenly More Canadians

Posted by Jillian - April 17th, 2009

You might wake up this morning and be a Canadian without even knowing it!

Actually, if I had to leave America and live in another country, Canada would probably be on the top of my list. On second thought, I could probably embrace being Italian and it’s not as cold there. But I’ve never been to either country – yet – so I’d like to withhold judgment until I can visit them both.

Easter Joy

Easter has always been one of my favorite holidays. The Spring season is a special time of year, and when you add the fun things that Easter brings you can’t get any better for a family gathering.

We always have fun coloring Easter eggs together – even on the few scattered years that there are no young children around to join in the fun. We also buy Easter candy to share with everyone – especially the jelly beans and the marshmallow peeps. Those are my own favorites.

And then there is the food for Easter dinner. We always buy a huge Honeybaked ham and have enough left over for several days of ham sandwiches, fried ham and eggs, and then Navy Bean soup with the ham bone.

Twisters Spotted

This afternoon is very scarey for us in Middle Tennessee. We have been watching dark skies and threatening black clouds march across the sky all day. The tornado sirens have gone off several times and we are prepared to take cover at a moment’s notice.

Thank goodness there is no school today, so most parents have their children at home with them or in a safe place. That means traffic is much lighter, too, so if people have to get home quickly they should be able to.

We just heard on the TV news that a tornado has touched down in Murfreesboro. That is just a 20 minute drive from my house. I hope that everyone has gone to their safe place inside their homes and that it is all over quickly for the people and homes in the tornado’s path.

Day of Fools

Posted by Jillian - April 2nd, 2009

Yesterday was April Fools Day. As a grown up I have not seen many people take advantage of the date for pulling pranks. As kids we used to have fun with it. I wonder if it is a sign of the times or if it is just because I am older now? I miss the giggling in anticipation. But maybe that is my passive aggressive side of me coming out.
