Corn Maze

Found this photo of a corn maze in Virginia. I think it is awesome that a farmer planned this out and cut the field of corn to make this design. This looks like it was about 20 acres of corn stalks. I don’t know how you work out a pattern like that from a tractor on the ground.

Pampering and Relaxation

Posted by Jillian - October 27th, 2009

Most of my girlfriends are big fans of massage. They love going to a spa and spending hours being pampered in many ways. I think that is great for them if they have the extra money in hand to pay for all those pampering treatments and if they have plenty of time to devote to themselves. But for me, I am always busy and n the go, and I really can’t imagine spending 4 hours in a spa on myself. I don’t think I could relax and enjoy myself even if I did find a time slot available to go and do that.

But relaxation is an important part of taking care of oneself and a big part of the equation when you think about the quality of your life. I would love to relax for a couple of hours. But I would rather spend that time in my own home and not in a spa. It is not that hard and not that expensive to find good things, like massage chairs, bath oils and candles to create a spa atmosphere in your own home. You have the privacy of your home and the convenience of all the items right at your fingertips to enjoy at will and for as long as you want. A great massage chair can make all the difference in your relaxation – if you’ve never tried one, you are in for a treat when you do.

Looking for Her Man

This interview with Sherri Shepherd was so entertaining tonight. Craig Ferguson was kidding around with her about her idea of the ideal man and she said that she has three criteria. He must be:

  • Macho
  • Crazy
  • Good FICO score

Haunted Houses

In the area we have a half dozen Halloween attractions that are high tech haunted houses. These are huge buildings turned into a maze of horror scenes with professional actors to scare the crap out of you if you let them. We are going to try to find one this weekend and have some Halloween fun.

Vacation for Health

Posted by Jillian - October 26th, 2009

My very clever neighbor has decided to get some help with body sculpting from a physician and has figured out a way to combine the work with a great European vacation. She told me that the savings from the procedure being performed overseas rather than here in the United States will actually pay for the 2 week’s hotel fees plus airfare.

There are top notch hospitals and physicians all over the world if you check carefully. In fact, some places are earning top notch ratings as alternative locations to surgeries in the United States. Of course, the driving factor of going outside of the U. S. is the cost savings. But my neighbor also realized that she could combine the surgery and short recovery time with an exotic vacation.

One of the things that sparked my interest was her comparison chart for Liposuction cost in Eastern Europe. You can go to the Czech Republic, Germany or Poland for liposuction and this web site gives you a chart of the typical fees by doctor. I was amazed! It even converts the local currency on the chart to your preferred currency. There are links to the physicians and everything you need to make all the arrangements, starting at the www.cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info web site.

Changing Sides

Posted by Jillian - October 26th, 2009

One of the cool things about Facebook is that you re-connect with a lot of people with whom you might have otherwise completely lost touch. It is so much easier to search for former co-workers and associates on Facebook than it is to use the phone book based people search. Even using Google makes it hard to find up to date contact information on a lot of people.

Once I latched onto one of my former employees from the computer company, it was easier to start finding more of those friends. It turns out that a great majority of my former co-workers from the computer company have changed to the telecom industry now.

There are a lot of very cool things going on in the telecom industry, even though people appear to be abandoning their home phone lines. Cell phones continue to evolve and I believe that there will one day be a complete merger between telephone, cable and computer systems into one service that uses the best of all worlds.

Changes in Telecom

Posted by Jillian - October 26th, 2009

When I got tired of bumping my head on the glass ceiling at the computer company I gave a direct sales a try. At the time it seemed all my friends were in sales and they were all very convincing that I should be in that line of work, too. But to be honest, I don’t like face to face sales. Not because of the rejection and objections and the daily frustrations of a dozen unfruitful sales calls. I don’t like the dishonesty in the face to face and phone to phone conversations. But I do like the marketing side of sales.

Isn’t it amazing how phone to phone is such a vital part of doing business? You have to wonder how anyone got things done before the advent of the telephone and sometimes I wonder how we managed without having cell phones.

Now the forward thinkers in the business world are realizing the advantages of business voip for telephone service. It is a concept that you have to introduce to old timers very slowly and deliberately. Unless the boss is an early adapter by nature, the idea of switching from traditional land lines and Ma Bell type of phone service to using the internet – even for PBX functions now! – is hard for some people to grasp.

I like to educate people on the possibilities of the internet and the different ways to send, receive and use data over the internet. VOIP is becoming more accepted as stable and reliable, and now it is proving to be more economical, too.

Gender Roles in Computing

Posted by Jillian - October 26th, 2009

Way back in the computer caveman days of the 1980′s, I was working for a computer company and loved the excitement of being on the leading edge of technology. Our company was developing and building computer systems and solutions for the Federal Government, the military, and a handful of private industries.

It was obvious early on that this field was another exclusive men’s club type of business. The only women welcome to the company were secretaries and administrative workers. There were only two women in management level positions, me and the Director of Purchasing.

The company focused heavily on technical engineers, repair technicians, and field service representatives. All of these positions were filled by men. On the sales side of the business we did have program directors, who were like customer service representatives and there were a few women in that department.

Otherwise, it was my department that had as many women in it as we had men. Not that it was a deliberate choice or any kind of plan. It just worked out that way. Women seemed more suited to the roles of taking care of those kinds of details and did not get bored as quickly with the repetitive nature of library and duplication work.

Strategy for Sam’s Club

Posted by Jillian - October 25th, 2009

Sam’s Club was incredibly crowded. I think it was full of families that don’t normally shop on Sundays because of football. There seemed to be a lot of pouting or dejected husbands being dragged along by shopping carts full of groceries.

There are several aisles of Christmas decorations and toys being put on display. I really don’t want to buy Christmas things this early in the season. But the problem with shopping at Sam’s is that you never know how long something they have on the floor is going to be available.

the only way you can buy what you need or want at Sam’s Club is to buy it as soon as it comes out on the floor. Especially if you wear a popular size of clothing or shoes. There is a high probability that if you don’t buy it now and wait until your next shopping trip, what you wanted to buy this week will be sold out or no longer carried when you come back.

So the Christmas items are not what I want to buy right now, but I had to take a look at them and if there was anything that was a great deal or met a need perfectly, I was going to have to spend the unplanned money today and buy it.
