• Why did I agree to a position on the board

Not long ago I decided to join a local community service organization. I really thought that it would be nice to meet some of my neighbors and get involved in some community improvement projects. A very short time later I was asked to serve on the board as the secretary for the following year. To be perfectly honest my first thought was that I just do not have the time to devote to anything more than what I already have on my plate, but I was assured that I would have a lot of help and it really was not going to be a lot of work.

Well I did not believe that, I have heard that in most organizations that the secretary is the one that does most of the work. But I decided that I’d go ahead and give it a try – I have some ideas about community service projects that I think could help a lot of people in the area. When I had the chance to talk to a few people in the club about my ideas they encouraged me to bring the ideas up at a board meeting. Tonight was the first board meeting that I was able to attend. And so I brought up my suggestions. I was quite surprised by the level of resistance that I received on every single suggestion. Now I’m not quite sure if I really want to continue to be a member of this organization. Quite disturbing.
