A Thank You To The Non Profit Attornies

It turns out that my nephew Rick actually hand wrote a thank you letter to the non profit attorney nc practice, Everett Gaskins Hancock LLP, who has giving him a good dose of inspiration to finish up in high school with good grades and many years of college, to become a non profit attorney himself. Rick had a very “rocky” childhood and we all didn’t think he would live long enough to become any where close to legal age. Yet he managed to get his life in order, which took a lot of hard work and tough love for the whole family for many troublesome years.

Someone in the large circle of school friends that Rick has accumulated through the years, had a father who worked for this non profit lawyers practice. Through out the years Rick heard so much about how theses attorneys are so active with the involvement with numerous committees and commissions to improve our community. Funny how no one really remembers Rick talking about this man and what he did for a living. Rick did spend a lot of time over at that friend’s house as teenagers tend to do to socialize and to learn from various households and people that they are exposed to during that time of their life.

I hope Rick gets a hand written letter back. There are still a few people and companies that still communicate without the aid of a cell phone, pager or the Internet. I’m proud of Rick. You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to be able to say or type that!!!

Gun control is a hot topic

Gun control is one of the hot topics that I try to avoid discussing with many of my friends and family. The terrible shootings that seem to keep happening seem to polarize the two sides of the issue. I don’t understand why so many people say that this type of thing is proof that we need to have MORE people carrying guns everywhere. When a friend told me today that this shooting in the elementary school I just found myself wondering why in the world are these crazy people getting their hands on guns?

And yet as soon as anyone mentions the suggestion about making the process of buying and owning guns more difficult for the mentally ill people, there is an uproar from so many gun enthusiasts about their right to bear arms! I can understand their concerns about who gets to determine who is mentally ill and who can own guns and who can’t own guns, but we really need to be doing SOMETHING more to protect the innocent people that become the victims of crazy people with guns.

People today were telling me that they felt that all of the teachers and staff in a school should be armed so that they could protect the children and themselves from any crazy person that comes into the school and starts to shoot up the place. Just the thought of teachers carrying loaded weapons while in school, instructing young children gives me the creeps.

High school tour

When our reunion group met for the tour of the high school, we were amazed at what the students have now at school. The school that we had gone to was completely torn down and a new building sat in its place. That was rather sad, and it was very strange to walk through the new halls of a school that bore the name of our alma mater. What was fascinating, though, was the tour through the science department. The well-equipped lab rooms even had a couple of different types of lab ovens and 3D printers in them! I had never seen a 3D printer before! That was awesome to see!

An overabundance of family lawyers

My stepdaughter has for many years told us that she wants to go to law school and become a lawyer. She used to get a smirk on her face when talking about it, saying that there are a lot of people that she wants to sue. The impression that I have always received from that is that she has some wishful thinking/fantasy going on about suing her father for mental duress of some kind because of the divorce between her parents. That’s a whole lot of anger right there!

My reply to that comment has been “if everyone that wanted to sue a relative became a lawyer, then there would be an overabundance of family lawyers in the world! She has not been getting scholarships or grants to go to college, so as far as I’m concerned it would probably be cheaper for her to just hire a lawyer than to pay all of those tuition and book expenses! But, who am I to rain on her parade; if it gives her some kind of comfort to think that somewhere down the road she will sue people for all of the things that have upset her in the past, then by all means, let the girl have her little fantasy.
